Workshop: Weaving an Apple Basket

THIS WORKSHOP IS FULL.

Have you ever considered weaving a nesting set of apple baskets? If so, here is your opportunity to start your own beautiful nesting set. Working over wooden molds in the methods of the Shakers, you can weave a traditional apple basket in one of three sizes: 8”, 10” or 12”. Artisan basket weaver Karen Wychock will instruct participants how to weave the body of the basket with reed, then finish it off with an oak handle.

Karen will also have dyed reed available for those who wish to add color to their baskets. She will provide ear handles for those who do not wish to use an overhead handle. This makes a great fruit or bread basket. Ear handles are available for the 10” and 12” basket.

This class will be repeated several times so that you can complete your nesting set. If you plan to complete a nesting set, it does not matter what size that you start with for your set.

When registering for this class, please specify what size basket that you will be weaving (8”, 10” or 12”) and what handle you will be adding to your basket (overhead or ear). If you have never woven a basket, Karen recommends that you start small and work up to the larger sizes.

Instructor Karen is a member of the Bucks County Craftsmen’s Guild and the PA Guild of Craftsmen. As a weaver of traditional Shaker baskets, she has sold her work through various shows throughout PA and Delaware. She was also president of the Penn-Jersey Basket Weavers Guild for six years and has taught numerous basket weaving workshops.

Preregistration is necessary as the workshop size is limited. The workshop fee is $60 ($55 member) plus the materials fee for the basket of your choice. No refunds are given unless a workshop is canceled for insufficient enrollment.

Materials fee:
8” basket – $30 (only overhead handle)
10” basket – $35 (overhead or ear handles)
12” basket – $40 (overhead or ear handles)
