Portrait Drawing Workshop

Join artist Susan Klinger as she teaches the basics of portrait drawing. You will learn about skull proportions and where many beginners make common errors. Tips for drawing individual facial features will be covered and what to look for to capture a likeness. Students will complete a portrait drawing in pencil from their own photo resource. Tips for handling the pencil to create strong values will be covered for those that need instruction.

Materials needed for the workshop:

Sketchbook or Quality drawing paper (several sheets) 9 x 12 minimum

Graphite pencils – 2B, 4B, 6B hardness

Kneaded eraser

Tracing paper 9 x 12, A few sheets

Drawing board if you have one

Printed portrait photo (Best if you took the photo, but a magazine photo will suffice for learning)

No flash photos! Lighting from the side with a light side & a shadow side of the face are best.

3/4 views are most interesting, but more advanced

Convert to B&W to better determine values

Please come prepared with a black & white photo printed to approximately 8 x 10. No flash photos.

Susan Klinger

Susan Klinger is an experienced art educator, having taught high school art & dual credit with MCCC at Perkiomen Valley High School for 34 years. Susan was creating art throughout her teaching career. She is most widely known for her award-winning pastel paintings, exhibiting locally & nationally. Most recently, she has recently been drawing children’s portraits on commission.
