Led by accomplished theorem artist Sandra Coldren, the students will learn painting techniques for the 18th century oriental form of watercolor stenciling known as pith painting. This intricate, beautiful botanical, “Butterfly with Yellow Flowers” (shown at left), is done on paper using techniques similar to theorem painting. This adult class is best suited for students who have some prior experience with stenciling. Each student will complete one design suitable for framing in a standard 9” x 12” frame (frame not included).
The materials to complete one pith painting in class will be supplied by the instructor. Students are requested to bring the following supplies: painter’s tape, paper towels, pencil, and a #1 liner brush (optional supplies are 1/8” to 1/2″ stencil brushes). Students will take home one completed pith design on acid-free paper, along with one set of stencils and written instructions to create additional paintings of the same design at home. For the student’s convenience, the instructor will also bring along extra supplies for sale to any student wishing to create additional theorems at home.
Preregistration is necessary as the workshop size is limited. The workshop fee is $55 ($50 member) plus a materials fee of $45 per student.
