The Mennonite Heritage Center announces a basket weaving workshop on Saturday, March 17, 2018 from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm led by master basket weaver Karen Wychock. Students will be weaving a gathering basket just in time for their summer blooms and veggies!
Participants can choose from two sizes: medium or large. The material cost for the basket is $45 for the medium basket and $50 for the large. Gathering Basket dimensions are medium: 8 1/2” x 14” x 4” and large: 11” x 17” x 5”.
Working over a wooden mold in the manner of the Shakers, the gathering basket will be made of a combination of reed, ash and oak. The body of the basket will be woven of reed with oak handles and runners. The rims will be made of pre-bent reed. Students will be lashing their rims to the basket with ash. Students will learn to prepare their material, lay out their base, weave the sides of the basket, attach the rims and handles, lash the basket and attach the oak runners with copper brads.
Instructor Karen Wychock is a member of the Bucks County Craftsmen’s Guild, the Bucks County Hand Weaver’s guild and the PA Guild of Craftsmen. As a weaver of traditional Shaker baskets, she has sold her work through various shows throughout PA and Delaware. She is also president of the Penn-Jersey Basket Weavers Guild and has taught numerous basket weaving workshops.
The workshop fee is $60 ($55 member) plus $50 for the materials fee for a large basket or $45 for a medium size basket. Preregistration is necessary as the workshop size is limited.
