Participants will focus on two different arts during the workshop – half of the workshop time will be used to weave Moravian Stars with basket maker Karen Wychock and the other half will be creating sgraffito redware pottery hearts with potter Denise Wilz.
Instructor Karen Wychock will supply the maple strips and all the other materials and tools for making 2 twelve-inch stars and 2 seven-inch stars. She will have additional material available for sale for those who want to make more stars on their own. Karen Wychock is a member of the Bucks County Craftsmen’s Guild and the PA Guild of Craftsmen. As a weaver of traditional Shaker baskets, she has sold her work through various shows throughout PA and Delaware.
Potter Denise Wilz will supply the redware hearts ready to sgraffito with the designs of their choice. Sgraffito means to “scratch” and workshop participants will draw a design of their choosing in a damp clay coating on the redware hearts. Choose a traditional Pennsylvania German design or create your own designs. Denise will bring books for ideas and patterns that she uses and provide the tools. The heart ornaments are 4” wide by 3” long. Participants can sgraffito from 4 to 10 hearts in the workshop time period. Four hearts are included in the cost of the workshop; up to 6 additional hearts can be purchased for $12 each. Denise will fire the hearts after the workshop – they can be picked up at MHC or can be shipped for an additional cost of $8 for USPS Priority Mail. Each heart will have a ribbon added to hang it.
Workshop size is limited and preregistration is required. The workshop fee is $118 ($113 member), which includes 4 Moravian stars and 4 sgraffito hearts. You can purchase and decorate up to 6 additional sgraffito hearts for $12 each. Add $8 if you want to have the hearts mailed to you after firing.
