The Mennonite Heritage Center, 565 Yoder Road, Harleysville, announces a Calligraphy Workshop scheduled for Saturday, May 6, 2017 from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm. Led by calligraphy artist Lori Yatron of Living Word Calligraphy, this workshop will focus on learning the lowercase alphabet of Narrow Foundational, an elegant, legible hand as taught in Sheila Waters’ book Foundations of Calligraphy. Letters are elliptical and taller with tight spacing. Participants will be learning and practicing the tighter spacing between letters and between words when using this hand. Participants will write out a longer piece of text. After discussing simple layout and some design concepts, students will plan and write out a rough draft then a good copy of a quote or passage of the students’ choice.
The materials list for the workshop includes: Higgins Eternal Ink, Speedball #2 nib, pen holder, Borden and Riley Layout Bond paper for practice. If you already have these materials, you do not have to pay the materials fee. The cost for the materials on the list will be $18 if you need the supplies.
Participants are also asked to bring a quote, verse, or passage of text for practice -about 5-10 sentences and a smaller passage to use as a finished piece – about 2-4 sentences. Also bring a pencil, eraser, ruler, paper towels, small water container and T square (if you have one).
Watercolor paper to use for a final copy will be available at the workshop. This is not a requirement, just an extra for those who wish to use this. A 10” x 10” piece of paper will be $1.25.
This workshop is for beginners through intermediate calligraphers. Preregistration is necessary as the workshop size is limited. The workshop fee is $60 ($55 member) plus a materials fee of $18 for the supplies described above.
