Basket Workshop

THIS WORKSHOP IS FULL.

The Mennonite Heritage Center announces a basket weaving workshop on Saturday, September 29, 2018 from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm led by master basket weaver Karen Wychock.

Working over a wooden mold in the manner of the Shakers, students will be weaving a tote basket just in time for their summer farmer’s market purchases or for a day at the beach!  The tote basket will be made of a combination of reed and oak.  The body of the basket will be woven of reed with oak handles and runners and measures 16″ long, 10″ wide and 20″ high.  The rims will be made of pre-bent reed.   A variety of dyed material will be available.

Students will learn to prepare their material, lay out their base, weave the sides of the basket, attach the rims and handles, lash the basket and attach the oak runners with copper brads.

Instructor Karen Wychock is a member of the Bucks County Craftsmen’s Guild, the Bucks County Hand Weaver’s guild and the PA Guild of Craftsmen.  As a weaver of traditional Shaker baskets, she has sold her work through various shows throughout PA and Delaware.  She is also president of the Penn-Jersey Basket Weavers Guild and has taught numerous basket weaving workshops.

The workshop fee is $60 ($55 member) plus $50 for the materials fee. Preregistration is necessary as the workshop size is limited.  No refunds are given unless a workshop is canceled for insufficient enrollment.
