Comforts of Home: Early Twentieth Century Farmhouse Furnishings

December 5, 2009-November 2010
Open House: Sunday, January 24, 2-5 pm

Take a step back in time with the Comforts of Home: Early Twentieth Century Farm Furnishings exhibit that recreates the kitchen, parlor and bedroom of a Pennsylvania farmhouse in the early 1900s. The kitchen setting includes a wood cook stove, wood box and dry sink among the furnishings. The icebox sign in the kitchen window lets the ice man know how many pounds of ice the housewife wants for her icebox while the kitchen table and chairs symbolize the heart of the home’s activity.  The parlor setting is more formal with the black overstuffed furniture, small patterned wallpaper and Victorian style bric-a-brac. Families did not relax in the parlor but used it for Sunday afternoon visitors. The bedroom is a more comfortable setting with a quilt covered bed, dresser and washstand. Framed religious mottos and a wedding certificate decorate the room while a porcelain chamber pot reminds us of the lack of modern facilities in homes from that era. This exhibit will run from December 2009 through November 2010 – visit to learn about home life of the period or perhaps recall memories of grandparents’ cozy homes.

Hours: Tuesday through Friday, 10 am to 5 pm; Saturday 10 am to 2 pm
