Led by artist Lori Yatron of Living Word Calligraphy, this introductory calligraphy workshop will focus on learning the Uncial hand, an early Irish script. The instructor will be teaching the Uncial alphabet, showing reproduction pictures of the beautiful Book of Kells, a ninth century Irish manuscript of the Gospels written in a form of Uncials.
Along with learning the script, participants will also color and letter an Irish bookmark design with Uncial lettering during the workshop. The materials fee of $10 will cover the pen holder, metal nib, a calligraphy marker, and a bottle of Windsor and Newton calligraphy ink. Paper and practice sheets will be supplied. Students should also bring a pencil, eraser, ruler, and scissors.
Preregistration is necessary as the workshop size is limited. The workshop fee is $55 ($50 member) plus a materials fee of $10 per student. If participants took the April 2014 Mennonite Heritage Center calligraphy workshop and purchased the penholder, etc., they can bring those materials and do not need to pay the $10 for another set.
